Who we support
With funding, CANCER101’s planners will support a minimum of 1.2 million people affected by cancer every year to include patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals.

Newly diagnosed cancer patients: Patients are immediately confronted with a deluge of new information, terminology, paperwork, financial concerns and life-saving (and changing) decisions regarding treatment options. In addition, it’s a daunting process to coordinate travel logistics, navigate insurance policies or find help if faced with little or no insurance—all while managing daily work and family obligations. The planner is given to patients when they need it most—when they have their first oncology/surgery appointment.

Patients with advanced cancer, metastases or recurrence: Patients with advanced, metastases or recurrence often feel there are not enough resources that meet their needs. CANCER101 has dedicated a tab inside the planner that speaks directly to their concerns. This section will benefit the newly diagnosed should they experience a metastases or recurrence.

Caregivers: A cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming for the caregiver who must manage a family and their loved-one’s illness. The planner helps caregivers access information and keep everything organized. There are also resources and tips inside the planner to help caregivers cope.

• Parents of children with cancer: The planner helps parents access information and keep everything organized to fight their child’s cancer.

• Health care professionals: Many heath care professionals use the planner together with their patients and caregivers. Health care professionals tell us that they find that an organized and informed patient allows them to focus more on the patient’s care.

• The underserved population including those with language, cultural or financial barriers: The planners are free and written (with the exception of the dictionary) at an eighth-grade reading level. The “How to Use the Planner” section is translated in eight languages. It explains that there are financial and emotional services to help them cope and that they are not alone. The section urges the patient to find a friend or family member to help them translate important information and resources found inside the planner. Further, the section suggests many ways a health care professional can help, including financial support, finding a ride to a doctor’s appointment and other potential barriers that the underserved population might experience. With additional funding, we hope to offer the planners in Spanish and Chinese.

• The general population: We believe cancer patients can be a great support in educating their family, friends and caregivers about early detection and prevention. Our 2010 planner will include an opportunity for patients to become a C101 Crusader. A dedicated tab in the planner will include a call-to-action, requesting the patient to educate their family, friends and local communities about early detection and prevention. Survivorship statistics tell it all: early diagnoses can save lives. Who better to promote prevention and early detection than those who have had cancer? With the right tools, we believe this population will be motivated to help save lives.
